The ForMAT project officially launches in Santiago de Compostela

We are excited to announce the official launch of the ForMAT project, following a successful kick-off meeting in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela. This marks the beginning of an ambitious journey to revolutionize forensic sciences across Europe.

On October 8th and 9th, 2025, the ForMAT project consortium came together for the first time. The meeting officially launched this four-year initiative. We want to thank our project coordinator, the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, for hosting a productive and insightful event.

Mapping the path forward for forensic innovation

During the two-day meeting, our international partners took part in strategic planning sessions. We discussed the key objectives for the next four years. Our focus will be on forensic methylation analysis, criminal investigations, and disaster victim identification.

The energy in the room was palpable. Together, we aligned on initial plans and set key milestones for the journey ahead.

By the end of the meeting, the consortium agreed on technical strategies, ethical considerations, and communication protocols. These agreements will help ensure the success of the project as we push forward with advancements in forensic science.

Inspired, aligned, and ready for the challenge

The enthusiasm in Santiago was easy to feel. The team left the meeting inspired and aligned on the path forward. This kick-off marks the start of an exciting four-year project aimed at pushing the boundaries of forensic science technology. We aim to develop tools for legal age assessment, forensic investigations, and disaster victim identification (DVI).

We are eager to begin our work. In the coming months and years, we will share our progress and achievements with the wider community. This is only the beginning of a long and impactful journey.

About the ForMAT project

The ForMAT (Forensic Methylation Analysis Toolsets) project is a European Union-funded research and innovation initiative, designed to tackle critical challenges in the field of forensic science. Over the next four years, ForMAT will develop and apply advanced methylation analysis techniques to improve forensic investigations, support disaster victim identification (DVI), and assist in legal age assessments for asylum claimants.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme under grant agreement No. 101225631.
